High
density Polyethylene: King "Starboard" is it's brand name,
also referred to as "Poly". This material is now used in place of wood
products especially on the exterior of the boat. Impervious to the elements and
virtually indestructible. Will not discolor, fade, chalk, peel, or smell funny.
It will warp if a large piece is unsupported, but will usually find its shape
again once the proper support has been installed. It is very easy to work with
this material with any common woodworking tools. Drill it, router it, table saw
it, chop saw, hand saw, band saw, hole saw, etc. Polyethylene does not accept
staples very well, but holds a wood screw nicely. You can even drill and tap it
with good results. Most adhesives do not hold to "poly", but you can
get 3M 5200 to stick if you rough it up with some sandpaper, clean it with a
non-residual solvent, and make sure it is very dry. There are some products out
there now that do a great job bonding "poly" but I do not have their
names right now. I have seen some of them at boat shows and it does work.
Starboard all has a texture and can collect some dirt and grime. The best
cleaner is something with a little grit to it like 3M Super duty rubbing
compound with a little water and a stiff brush. Of course there are many
products that work very well.
Pro-Board: Lightweight material - PVC foam board - Used for cushion backing, interior cabinets, panels, etc. 1/4" - 3/4" thick available. paint it, glue it with adhesive caulks or PVC glue, heat it and bend it, staple it, easy to drill and cut. Non UV stable, you must paint it if used outdoors.
Acrylic: Another high density material usually seen with the "Spartech" logo on the protective paper. This material differs from polyethylene, it is harder and more brittle. Acrylic is commonly used for all kinds of doors, cabinet faces, etc. It polishes to a shiny finish and cleans easily. If scratched, some wet sanding and buffing will bring it back to new condition. Acrylic is more difficult to work with. It's brittle nature means it is prone to cracking. It can still be cut, drilled with wood tools, but extra care must be taken. It is not meant for walking surfaces. Acrylic is similar to Plexiglass and Lexan. It comes in clear, smoked, white, and a variety of colors. SeaRay uses tan acrylic for their cabin entry doors on the Sundancers and smaller cabin boats
Plastics: UV protected or not UV protected. Most of our products are UV protected. Plastics are used for many parts including rod boxes, Tackle Lockers, Glove boxes, shower enclosures, medicine cabinets, cooler inserts, fire extinguisher inserts, dash panels, trays and bins. It is lightweight and fairly strong. It will crack if directly impacted with a heavy object. We also have some black sheet plastic that has a shiny surface. It makes great instrument panels and filer panels.

Measure all dimensions including thickness. many of our scrap pieces have holes drilled or cutouts for hinges, so please indicate if you need two clean sides, one clean side, etc. Chances are about 99% that you will have to do some cutting or shaping on your own to get the precise shape you want.
